1893

Swami Vivekananda addresses the Parliament of World's Religions in Chicago. First major introduction of Hinduism to America.

1920s

Paramahansa Yogananda arrives in America and founds the Self-Realization Fellowship. His "Autobiography of a Yogi" becomes a global classic.

1965

Immigration and Nationality Act removes national origin quotas. Hindu immigration to America accelerates dramatically.

1970s

Hindu temples begin to be built across America. The first major temples open in New York, California, and Texas.

1977

The Hare Krishna movement (ISKCON) brings Vedic culture into mainstream American consciousness.

1990s

Hindu Americans enter Congress and statehouses. The community's political voice grows.

2010s

Tulsi Gabbard becomes the first Hindu member of Congress (2013). Kamala Harris becomes the first VP with Hindu heritage (2021).
